Some Thoughts on NewSound Live at Bobo, KL

During my business trip to Singapore and Malaysia, I had a chance to drop by Bobo, which is located in Bangsar, KL. It is said that Bangsar is a fashionable place and I actually saw a bunch of Westerners hanging around in the neighborhood. The reason why I visited there was to see the live performance by the band called NewSound, which is led by a talented pianist John Dip Silas and my friend, Hiroyuki Yagi is a member of the band. This is my second time to see their live performance, and here is what I thought at that time.

In the live performance held on November 11, 1st set was instrumental and in the second set, a singer, Aina Abdul joined.

On this occasion, the band's regular drummer, Terrence Ling was not there and the replacement drummer (Gibien Guan is his name, Yagi noted later.) seemed to have a very simple drum set. It made me feel that they sounded slightly different from the one I heard in June. Terrence Ling is a very tight drummer, while the guy at the gig sounded more loosely. And the band's selection at the first set sounded delicately, rather than technically or complicatedly. I assume that replacement of a drummer and the difference in play style of the drummers surely affected to the performance or tunes they played. They played originals by the members along with the songs by Dayna Stephens and Alan Pasqua. The selection of these musicians' songs definitely showed the delicate direction of the band on that night. And John Dip Silas played beautiful solos especially in his original entitled "For Brad" which is dedicated to my favorite pianist, Brad Mehldau.

Hiroyuki Yagi only played soprano sax while Scott Murphy played tenor. Frankly speaking, I wanted to hear their tenor battle because Scott Murphy's phrasing sounded more attractive and aggressive than the last time I heard him. The guitar player, Hor Chee Seng once again reminded me of Kurt Rosenwinkel with his clean tone and phrasing and his sound matched with the song selection. The bassist, Icco Elnoel showed his high solo skills along with backing capability.

In the 2nd set, when Aina Abdul started to sing, I was surprised by her attractive voice, singing capability, and the articulation. She sometimes sang powerfully, sometimes emotionally, and sometimes delicately. It proves her singing capability and everybody would instantaneously know that she is a capable singer. She impressed me by singing Rachell Ferrell's "Why You Wanna Mess It Up?" which is not well known but deserves wider recognition, and delivered it very beautifully. And my friend Hiroyuki Yagi played a very melodious and nice solo. Video of that song  is attached for your reference.

Their play was quite attractive all through the set, but if I can say one thing to make it better, I would say that I heard too much fake in “I Wish” sung as an encore, With Aina Abdul’s attractive voice and capability, she should have sung that song more straightly. Sometimes, audience wants some excitement in the live gig, though, she could satisfy and excite audience even with less gimmick. I would rather believe that excitement should made by NewSound in that situation. For that purpose, I want John to play Rhodes in some occasions.

However, I enjoyed that night and as always drank too much because of the comfortable atmosphere at Bobo and the sound by NewSound. I expect their upcoming album release from Japan.
